NEW DELHI: Going to the temple may be passe but God still rules. So, a day before the Board exam results, guess what's keeping students occupied - an SMS that claims to have originated directly from Vaishno Devi, which, if forwarded, promises splendid results. The second part of the SMS is more a masked threat claiming that if ignored, one could even fail their boards.
So in order to placate the powers, students have been punching away furiously at their cellphones, forwarding the goddess' blessings or Hanumanji's gada or Shivji's trishul whatever the case may be to all and sundry.
Gaurav Kapoor, a student of class XII, Modern School, Barakhamba Road, said he was been flooded with such messages since the start of the Board exams. "I used to be so nervous that I would religiously forward them to all my friends. I realise it wasn't the smartest thing to do, but I couldn't help it," he said. So from Sai Baba, Hanuman to Ganesh, Mother Mary or Guru Nanak to Kabir clearly, the tone is secular. Gaurika Kapoor of Mater Dei Convent said that though she was tired of receiving such messages, she gave in to the threat issued by them since 'she didn't want to take any chances.' "I have got a Mary ka cross, a Ganeshji and many more, all followed by the same message telling me to pass it on to 10 or 15 classmates," she said. Tanay Chaturvedi of Birla Vidya Niketan said that there was also a message from the rather dubious-sounding 'Black God' whose blessings had the most ominous tone of all. Of course, many bravehearts decided to throw caution to the wind and ignored the messages altogether. Rumina Malik, a student of Mater Dei said: "It's silly and adds to the tension how can an SMS determine the future course of your life. I just delete them as soon as I receive them no one's really going to benefit from this charade." Expect perhaps, the cellphone service providers.
